Photo contest celebrates 75 years of wildlife management areas

Whether visitors to wildlife management areas are hunters, wildlife watchers or hikers, they can witness stunning beauty and take these experiences home as memories — and even capture them in great photos.

One of the many ways the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and several conservation organizations are celebrating the 75th anniversary of WMAs in Minnesota is to invite people to share their WMA photos in a statewide photo contest.

“This is a great opportunity to share some photos to celebrate the benefits WMAs bring to wildlife and Minnesotans,” said David Trauba, DNR wildlife section manager. “We’ve seen a lot of excitement generated around WMAs this year as we celebrate 75 years, and part of that is reminding people why our WMAs matter and the importance of preserving and enhancing this legacy for future generations to enjoy.”

By sharing photos, participants can help highlight the beauty, diversity, and purpose of these lands. People are free to share as many photos as they like, whether it’s a snapshot of wildlife, a meaningful family tradition, a successful day afield, or a favorite quiet corner of a WMA.

People can submit the photos on the Minnesota DNR website. The contest will run through Friday, Jan. 2, 2027.

Sponsoring organizations include Ducks Unlimited, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, Pheasants Forever, Ruffed Grouse Society and the American Woodcock Society, National Wild Turkey Federation, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Minnesota Wildlife Federation, Minnesota Outdoor News, and Delta Waterfowl.

“Thank you to our partner organizations for helping develop and promote this photo contest,” Trauba said. “Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg — these organizations contribute so much to support conservation work that improves habitat and enhances people’s outdoor experiences on Minnesota’s public lands, year-in and year-out.”

About WMAs

In 1951, a small group of Minnesota conservationists launched the “Save the Minnesota Wetlands” program with an audacious goal: permanently protect 250,000 acres of land and preserve it for wildlife habitat. That vision became Minnesota’s WMA system, which today encompasses more than 1,500 areas and 1.4 million acres.

WMAs are habitat-rich areas that provide havens for wildlife and recreational opportunities for hunters, hikers, nature watchers and trappers. More information and an online tool to find nearby WMAs is available on the Minnesota DNR WMA finder webpage.
